As I See It

Oh, how we love change

Just a few brief comments from me on Jack Dorsey’s plans to change the Twitter character limit of tweets from 140 to 10,000.

That’s a pretty big leap no matter which way you look at it. And okay, users are not going to see their timelines saturated with folks’ self indulgences.

Someone, please?

But seriously – what is the GOD DAMN point? Is this really the best they can come up with to make Twitter the place to be for newbies? Really?

In the age of Instagram, Periscope and Snapchat who in their right mind is going to click that ‘read more’ button? We have Medium, WordPress, Flipboard, the BBC and others for our longer form stuff. LinkedIn even beat Twitter to the punch here with Pulse!

This just smacks of another thing on my screen eating up space.

Now obviously, I need to see it in action and initial reports/rumours have been scarce on any practical detail but I don’t like what I’m hearing about Twitter’s direction in 2016. ‘Moments’ wasn’t a great start to the supposed revolution and if bumping up the character count is a ‘big play’ then it looks bleak.

Why not capitalise on Periscope’s offer and bring live video right into the Twitter feed? Or renew relations with Instagram? I know there are challenges in both cases but a challenge is surely better than cheap short terminism.

Question: What would ever entice you to read a long form tweet?
